I absolutely LOVE to play around with patterns, but sometimes I end up looking like a hot mess. My biggest pattern mixing fail? One time when I was eight, I decided to wear three different types of floral prints… at once. Obviously, I’m meant to be a fashion blogger, ha! Even though that was a major fashion fail, I think taking risks with fashion is the only way we’ll find what we love. This season is such a fun time to try out different trends, so today I’m sharing my favorite tips for pattern mixing for fall!
1. Don’t be afraid to try something new.
We all know the classic combo of stripes and plaid for fall – it is a classic for a reason! With today’s look, I wanted to branch out and go for a floral print instead of plaid. Florals are usually associated with spring, so they’re an unexpected change for this season!
2. When in doubt, stripe it out.
If you aren’t sure what patterns will look good together or you’re unsure about branching out, start with a basic striped pattern. Stripes are my favorite (no surprise here) and they are the BEST base for any other pattern. A few patterns that look amazing with stripes? Florals, camo, plaid, leopard print. You name it!
3. Stick with the same color palette.
This is definitely a tried and true tip – but that’s because it works! You can keep your pattern mixing from looking like a confused toddler by keeping in the same general color palette. Along with that, I would choose patterns that don’t have too many colors going on.
4. Add fall accessories.
Obviously if you don’t live in the south, this outfit isn’t for you! But, for those of us that go from 50s one week to 70s the next, this is a great look. Fabric shorts are my favorite to wear when I want to look nicer, and a 3/4 length sleeve top is perfect for this weather. I added my favorite ankle boots to this look because they give off the perfect fall vibes without making me sweat. If you’re looking for other options, add a patterned scarf to your favorite outfit.
My shorts are only $12 from Target – if you’ve seen my Instagram, you know how much I love them! They’re longer than typical fabric shorts, so if you’ve been looking for a pair of fabric shorts that cover more in the fall, these are for you!
