In 2022, I made a life-changing decision: starting Nuuly. I’m being a tad dramatic, but renting clothes really has been an amazing choice for my wardrobe. Today, I’m diving in with a full Nuuly review: how it works, pros and cons, and my top tips if you want to try it too.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: ALL ABOUT NUULY
If you’re not familiar, Nuuly is a clothing rental program. You pay $88 a month to receive six pieces of clothing (of your choice) from brands like Free People, Anthropologie, ASTR the Label, and more. $90 is pretty expensive, but I’ve found it totally worth the price. I don’t shop too often, but I get bored with what’s in my closet easily. I have a fashion blog and I love sharing new outfit ideas—but I don’t want to promote consumerism or buy things that will just sit in my closet. I love having the option to switch things up in my wardrobe, and Nuuly comes down to about $15 a piece per month. Definitely worth it IMO.
FYI: this post isn’t sponsored and I pay for my subscription every month, but you know I’ve gotta keep it real so even if it was sponsored I’d share the real deal.
You can keep and purchase pieces from your rental bag at a discounted rate, but I still haven’t done that. Instead, I’ve tried styles I didn’t know I would like and found other options for those later.
Here’s a quick summary of how it works: once you sign up and pay, your Nuuly will be unlocked. Once you fill it with six pieces of your choice and confirm, it’ll ship to you. It takes 2-3 business days to process and 2-3 days to ship, so you can expect to really have about 3 weeks with your Nuuly. At the end of the month or when you’re done, send back your clothes in the provided bag, and that’s it until the next round!
PROS:
- You have tons of options for styles and occasions. I’ve used Nuuly for everything from everyday jeans to wear to work to a dress to wear as a wedding guest.
- You don’t have to worry about doing laundry or small stains—Nuuly will take care of it.
- You can try styles before committing. I tried a pair of leather pants and found myself reaching for them, so when I found leather pants on major sale at Express a few months later I knew I’d wear them!
- Shipping is flexible and there aren’t late fees if you return a few days after your bill date—just beware that you’ll have less time with your next Nuuly because of shipping time.
CONS:
- $90 a month isn’t cheap—if you want to try Nuuly out but you’re on a budget, I’d recommend saving it for special occasions or trips. $90 is still cheaper than some cocktail dresses and formalwear would be, and it’s a better deal for clothes you’ll only wear on vacay anyway.
- You can’t trade anything in your bag, so if something doesn’t fit, you’re just out of luck for that month. Just know you’ll probably have at least one piece per Nuuly that doesn’t fit exactly the way you imagine. Speaking from experience, lol.
- It can take hours to sort through the site. If you really enjoy shopping, this might not be a con, but I find it overwhelming to try to find pieces I love, read reviews to get the right size, and confirm my order in one or two days.
- Pieces get snatched up quickly—as in, I’ve had a piece in my “cart” and it became unavailable after 15 minutes so I had to find something new!
NUULY TIPS:
- Spend plenty of time reading reviews. Sizing can be tricky since there are so many brands, so I always read reviews for people who have similar measurements as me. There’s still going to be hit or miss options, but Nuuly reviewers are thorough which really helps.
- Keep pieces in your closet to relieve the stress of filling your Nuuly. I know it sounds silly to think getting clothes could be stressful, but it really does take time! Instead of unlocking your Nuuly and feeling a mad dash to choose pieces, I like to browse every once in a while and add pieces I’ve wanted to try. That way, when it’s time to fill your bag, you have plenty of choices to start.
